Chapter Eleven

“Come on!” Practically bouncing through the front door, Braeden grabbed his mate’s hand and pulled. “Come on, let’s go!”

Zarrik chuckled as he followed him out of the cottage and down the front steps. “This town has been here for centuries, tarro. It’s not going anywhere.”

True, but he couldn’t wait to see it. “Where are we going first?”

“There is literally only one street with anything worth seeing on it.”

He said that like it was a bad thing. Braeden begged to differ. “Okay, let’s go there.” At the bottom of the steps, he paused, looking between Zarrik’s SUV and the street. “Should we walk?”

The sun shined brightly against the backdrop of a brilliant blue, cloudless sky, casting a golden light across everything it touched. The temperature still soared into the red, but it wasn’t as humid as it had been the day before. Besides, his walk to work was probably longer than the perimeter of Hunters Hollow.

“If you want. You’re not too sore?”

Braeden rolled his eyes. “I’m fine.”

Okay, so maybe he was a little sore, but in all the right ways and in all the right places. They’d come together again in the middle of the night, then once more after he’d woken up in Zarrik’s arms. Each time had been just as intense and explosive as the first, and he liked knowing he would be feeling the proof of their intimacy for the rest of the day.

His one minor complaint was that Zarrik hadn’t claimed him. That was a big step, though, and not something to be entered into lightly. They’d get there, and in the meantime, he knew how to be patient.

It was strange to see Zarrik out of his work clothes. Instead of his usual suit and tie, he wore a pair of black basketball shorts and a heather-gray tee that draped beautifully off his broad shoulders. Of course, he looked devastatingly handsome in anything—or nothing—but Braeden preferred his current look. Not only did Zarrik appear more at ease, but he also seemed a hell of a lot more accessible.

Then again, that was probably the point. Donning his suit was like putting on armor every morning, both to shield himself from the horrors of his job and to intimidate criminals.

Or Braeden could be giving a lot more credit to a piece of clothing than it warranted.

“Okay, so I know what bounty hunters and Investigators are,” he said, linking their hands together as they strolled down the street. “I know what guards are, and I’m guessing Directors are kind of like managers.” He beamed when Zarrik nodded. “What about Guardians? Killian said they protect the royal families.”

“They do. I guess you could consider them a kind of elite guard. They’re shifter-mage hybrids, and they’re virtually indestructible.”

Damn, he could see why the royals would want someone like that protecting them. “And one of them lives here?”

“Former Guardian.” Zarrik pointed to a house a little farther down the street with a wraparound porch and green railing. “Thorne McIver. He’s an Investigator now.
